National Clearinghouse responds to Philadelphia DA's decision to appeal the stay of execution in a case of sexual abuse victim

The National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women (NCDBW) supports efforts to stop the execution of Terry Williams, a victim of sexual of abuse. Terry Williams was scheduled to be executed on October 3, 2012 in Pennsylvania. Like many of the defendants we assist, Terry Williams' jury never heard evidence about his experiences of abuse, including abuse by the decedent. To learn more about Terry Williams' case, go to his website.

On September 28, 2012, Terry Williams' death sentence was vacated by Philadelphia Judge Teresa M. Sarmina. She also ordered a new sentencing hearing. The Philadelphia District Attorney's office immediately appealed those decisions. The National Clearinghouse believes that the right and just thing would be for the DA to accept Judge Sarmina's decision and to stop any and all wasteful appeals immediately.

Reflections on an Execution

On September 23 2011, Teresa Lewis was executed in Virginia. Staff of the National Clearinghouse worked hard organizing people to do what they could to save Teresa's life. After the execution, Sue Osthoff (Director) and Andrea Bible (Special Projects Coordinator) sent out messages to their colleagues and friends. Heidi Notario-Smull sent us a moving piece she wrote about talking to her almost 9-year-old son on the night Teresa was being killed. With her permission, we are including it here.
